While Milton Berle (a.k.a.: Uncle Miltie) was known for a lot of zany stuff, this quote is crystal clear.

Milton was the child of a paint salesman and a department store detective. His film career began with an appearance in the 1914 silent film classic, The Perils of Pauline where, as legend has it, he was thrown from a speeding train. At the age of six.

It was all uphill from there.

His silent film career spanned more than fifty films. While Milton went onto Broadway, vaudeville, the talkies, and radio, it was television that brought him the greatest success. His Texaco Star Theater, first broadcast in 1948 opened Milton’s largest door.

When Milton originally went on the air, there were only 500,000 sets in the entire country. By mid-season, the number had skyrocketed to over a million and by 1954, mote than 26 million American homes had at least two television sets. While some folks are perfectly happy with Adobe Illustrator’s “factory” default settings, a custom default fill and stroke can help to increase your productivity (and ease your creative flow).

The default fill/outline in Adobe Illustrator is a white fill with a black stroke.

To change the default fill and outline swatches:

1. Change the stroke and fill to the desired colors. (In this example, we will use a one hundred percent cyan fill with no stroke.)
2. Next, open the Graphic Styles palette and click the New Graphic Style icon to create a new style from the current stroke and fill.
3. Hold the Option key and drag the new graphic style swatch over the first swatch in the Graphic Styles palette.

Now, when you hit the D key, the default colors will be the newly selected colors.

Wrightsville Beach is a North Carolina barrier island, located between Cape Hatteras (to the north) and Myrtle Beach (to the south). Back in 1977, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Saturday Night Fever, were the top grossing movies. Jimmy Carter took office, vinyl was fading, cassette tapes ruled the day, compact discs hadn’t hit the scene, and those clunky old 8-track cartridges were still hanging around. Donna Summer released her sixth record album, Once Upon a Time, a double album extravaganza.

She failed to crack the top 100 with a single.

Once Upon a Time in 1977 is a “disco-centric science fiction adventure” film by Chris and Anne Lukeman of Kill Vampire Lincoln Productions, in Champaign, Illinois.

In the probably-alternate 1970s, disco is king and tensions are high. Scientist heroes Jack and Sam try to balance normal family lives with ray guns, robots, and an ominous portal in time and space.

Disco jeans and haircuts! It’s 28 minutes of Retro Disco Sci-Fi.

Once Upon a Time in 1977 screened at the New Art Film Festival in Champaign last month. While it doesn’t appear that a trailer has hit the Internet (yet), here’s a slightly earlier incarnation (Once Upon a Time in 1972) of Chris and Anne’s awesome work …

Whether you’re orbiting the Earth, or circling a soccer ball, setting text around a round path is one of the most common tasks in sticker design. While Adobe Illustrator makes this a snap, the procedure can be a little daunting if you’ve never done it before.

With that in mind, here’s a cool little step-by-step tutorial that demonstrates the basics …

1. To put text around a circle in Adobe Illustrator, start by creating a circle shape or a round image.
2. Center the circle on the art board, using the Align tools.
3. Create a path for the type by selecting the circle and clicking Object > Path > Offset Path.
4. Select the Type on a Path tool from the Type tool flyout menu.
5. Add some type along the path.
6. Drag a guide from the Rulers to help align the text.
7. Drag the text path handles to the points where the guide meets the circle.
8. Center the text, using the Align Center command.

Voilà! You now have text set around a circle.
