Polo is a game best known for being played in the water. Or on horses.
But bicycles? Who plays polo on bicycles?
The MalletheadZ, that’s who!
The Durango MalletheadZ are “America’s best bike polo players on grass.” They recently expanded their horizons (and battlegrounds) to include 3v3 hardcourt bicycle polo and were triumphant at the recent Mile High Mallet Throwdown, held in Denver, Colorado. Legend has it that the event was filmed for inclusion in an upcoming Kickstarter-funded documentary, MalletheadZ – A Bike Polo Story About Life, Love, and the Road Less Ridden.
From the Kickstarter campaign description:
A group of zealous bike polo players from Durango, Colorado are widely regarded as being the best grass bike polo players in the nation. For the past ten years, the group religiously competes against one another every weekend. Having entered every grass polo tournament throughout the region and always placing, if not winning, the group is looking for a new challenge. In order to see where their true potential lies, the group of Durango polo players, otherwise known as the MalletheadZ, have entered into a competition that is based on the sport they love, yet completely foreign: hardcourt bike polo.
Whether competing on grass or on the hard court, you gotta be hardcore … and that means no Ralph Lauren logo shirts with popped collars. At least not in my book …
