Live for the Funk

Comments Off

Live for the Funk?  Oh, baby, you know we do. And our favorite music genre plus the Internet equals the fine folks at LFTF. Bet you’ll come for the free music downloads, but you’ll stay for the interviews, premiers, deep tracks, and a “Weekly Dose of Bass.”

We started LIVE FOR THE FUNK in 2008 with the simple vision of having a communal place to rave about the music we love. Since then, other than our look, nothing has changed. You’ll find great, new music selected by people who have a respect for eardrums. Our focus is to consume for the consumer. We sift through the junk so you don’t have to, providing you with only the music we wholeheartedly feel you should be listening to. Unless stated otherwise, every song featured on our site is available for free download.

Solid! While we love the founders of funk—Tower of Power, George Clinton, and of course, James Brown—we’re digging the sounds of the new crew like DJ Medhi and Sinjin Hawke. Old school, new school, it doesn’t matter; just as long as you grab your bop guns and get on down.

Stickers for Mari Smith

StickerGiant recently had the pleasure of printing custom stickers for social media whiz Mari Smith. Check out the video of our printing presses in action.

Don’t know Mari? You will, grasshopper. This Internet entrepreneur has been blazing the trail since 1999 to help businesses and causes master the art of  social media and relationship marketing. From books to training sessions to webinars to speaking engagements to Twitterific tips and topics, Ms. Smith is in touch like few others in her field. She even has a new book coming out this week! (No, we can’t confirm that she sleeps.)

To quote J.J. Walker, this lady is “dyn-o-mite!”

Daddi O Smoke & Skate Shop

Comments Off

Maybe there’s something in the air as Halloween approaches? As with the folks at KillMoreZombies.com, our friends at Daddi O Smoke & Skate Shop are also incognito (at least online). Tell us the zombies aren’t skaters, too?

Anywho, Halloween is just around the corner, and if you don’t have a costume yet, hop to it! There are so many cute and funny ideas for kids’ costumes these days. No pressure, but if your kid goes out in a sheet with a couple of holes cut in it, well, Charlie Brown knows how your kid is gonna feel.

And for goodness sakes, what about the pets? Does Rufus have a costume yet? What about Fluffy? Looks like you’d better get your DIY on!

Speaking of costumes, allow us to step on the soap box for a moment. Exactly what is up with the trend of making just about any Halloween costume an opportunity to put the lady goods on display? You know what we’re talking about: naughty nurse, French maid, sexy bee. That’s right: one year, we saw a woman dressed up as a sexy BEE. Even worse? This year’s topical sexy costume is of a recently-assassinated terrorist (no joke). This has to stop! Let’s take a deep breath and get reasonable, people.

Kill More Zombies (dot com!)

Comments Off

Things are looking a little dark over at KillMoreZombies.com. You guys okay out there?

While they get things ready to survive the Zombie Apocalypse (it could happen), let’s talk about where you were when you first thought zombies were cool.

Were you reading Jane Austen, when suddenly, zombies attacted? Thinking about the most awesome Michael Jackson video of all time, because it featured über-gentleman, Vincent Price? Or (admit it) were you watching the Weather Channel?

For this zombie lover, Sean of the Dead is about the best rom zom com out there…which is how we first fell in love with the undead.

Madame Lazonga’s Tattoo

Comments Off

At Madame Lazonga’s Tattoo in the Pike Place Market, Seattle’s self-proclaimed “First Lady” of tattoo has created an oasis that looks more like a swank beauty shop than your typical flash ink parlor at the edge of a strip mall.

At Madame Lazonga’s Tattoo you will find a friendly staff dedicated to the art of body beautification. We take pride in our comfortable environment and welcome you whether you’re just curious, or if you’re into collecting large body art. The shop’s owner, Vyvyn (pronounced Viveen) Lazonga, began tattooing in 1972 and has had a shop in the famous historic Pike Place Market since 1989. She is world renowned for her art and has garnered many awards in her many years of tattooing. For much of that time she worked alone, and managed everything herself (no easy feat!). In recent years she has brought together a small crew of talented artists to create a safe, and inviting environment where clients can get beautiful custom tattoo work without the intimidation or stress you might find in some of today’s busy street shops.

Cool! And beautiful work, but WOW, that had to hurt.

Ever wonder why some people can take the pain while the toughest guy on the planet starts crying like a wee baby when he gets a splinter? Turns out, it’s not his fault—it’s his genes. Yup, as with everything else in life you can blame Mom and Dad for your wussitude.

Voodoo Choppers

Comments Off

Due east of Pontiac, Michigan is a magical place for motorcycle lovers. Metal master Eric Gorges has turned Voodoo Choppers into an enchanting destination for handmade bikes (didja see them on the Discovery Channel’s Ultimate Car Build-Off?). And he’s done it by following one simple goal:

I have always strived to build the best hand crafted motorcycles in the world.

Hard work transformed into the simply beautiful: Check out their One 2 One bikes that are truly one of a kind!

Where to go on your newly-forged ride? Roll on down to New Orleans, long home to practitioners of that old black magic. Be sure to stop in at this place, if only to make sure you’re cruising with the right kind of Ju-Ju.

We’re not sure what all those acronyms stand for, but that photo makes us think of the time all of us kids tasted the MRE’s from our dad’s Army kit. That he took to Vietnam. Sigh. As with the decades-old cigarettes we snuck from Grandma’s coffee table, we can’t recommend Army food from the 1970s.

To be serious for one minute: we support our troops, appreciate the sacrifice of their families, and hope for a safe homecoming for all.

Skirt Sports

Comments Off

Skirt Sports believes that “what you wear matters.” Of course it does! They also hope you’ll “convert to skirt” for your fitness wear. Cute and fun, right?

On her way to launching Skirt Sports in 2004, professional triathlete Nicole DeBoom won an Ironman wearing a home-sewn prototype. This skirt is the symbol of our mission – Fitness clothing with the perfect balance of Fashion, Performance and Attitude! Skirt Sports inspires women of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to transcend their perceived limits and pursue their greatest ambitions. We celebrate each woman’s strength and beauty as she embraces the transformative power of fitness and has fun doing it. When you look good, you feel good and when you feel good, you perform better.

Ever since Title IX was passed into federal law in 1972, any educational program that receives federal funding requires gender equity…like sports in schools. Does that include fitness skirts? Could be. If any of you boys out there feel like converting to skirt, we say go for it! Because if it’s good enough for Sir Sean Connery, it’s good enough for us.

Jet Edison

Comments Off

Boulder’s own Jet Edison has been busy making a name for themselves with their signature rock-jam hybrid stylings.

Word of Jet Edison’s captivating performances has been spreading rapidly, and gaining them recognition all across their home state and beyond. Upon recently returning from a successful Spring tour in the Midwest, JE was nominated for Best “Rock – Jam/Improv” Band in Colorado by the Denver news publication Westword. It is their combination of intriguing original compositions, talent, and raw energy that have been making audiences dance all night and talk about them all day. One such performance was their late-night show after the Colorado festival NedFest in 2010, where Jet Edison played a five-hour set, joined in part by Eric Yates (Hot Buttered Rum), until 5:00am to a packed crowd!

Congrats, guys! We love a hometown-boys-make-good story. And they’re playing tonight in StickerGiant’s neck of the woods! The Fox Theatre is one heck of a great place to see a show, as the party people of Boulder have been doing since 1926.

Arctica Race

Comments Off

Are you training for your next big downhill race? Or are you more of a freeride lifer,  who’d rather hurl carcass and risk the goods over carving up some ego snow any time, every time? Either way, Arctica Race understands and has you covered (literally).

We save you money by bringing SKI RACE TRAINING and FREERIDE clothing direct from the factory. ARCTICARACE.COM does not follow the conventional method of distribution and sales. ARCTICARACE.COM receives their inventory directly from the factory and brings them straight to you. By doing this, ARCTICARACE.COM  cuts out the “middle man” that boosts prices at other ski stores. So you get high quality SKI RACE TRAINING and FREERIDE clothing at discount prices.

Ski togs at a discount? Sweet! Also sweet? This guy’s um, bravery, for skiing down one of the longest escalators in the London Underground. Or how about uber-ski god, Jamie Pierre’s jump off of a 60-foot cliff? Good stuff! Of course, the best of the best of extreme activities comes from this group of fearless brainiacs featured on a popular cable show with a name unprintable on this family-friendly blog.

Yoga One

Comments Off

Feeling cranky? Stressed and depressed? If you’re one of the 731,424 fortunate residents of Charlotte, North Carolina, you have Yoga One to help you get your groove back.

Our mission: To inspire and empower each individual to seek and follow their journey to the alignment with their true and Higher Self, with their world around them and with the divine. We believe this journey leads to freedom, transformation, love, and joy. We commit to growth, accountability, truth, courage, and compassion for all. We commit to expanding physical limitations, removing emotional blocks, deepening spiritual connections, and creating possibilities, one student at a time, one class at a time.

Sounds a lot like this speech from Apple’s founder, Steve Jobs, whose life’s work literally changed the world—and whose passing has left us saddened. Here’s his message:

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Namaste, Mr. Jobs. Thank you for being.

Ed’s Cantina & Grill

Comments Off

We can vouch for Ed’s Cantina & Grill: great food, cool people, and a sunny outdoor patio—all at the gateway to the Rocky Mountains!

Located in downtown Estes Park, Colorado, Ed’s Cantina & Grill has been locally owned and operated since 1985. Newly remodeled in 2004, the interior boasts warm colors, a separate bar, and an event room for parties. Add the outdoor seating, great food, excellent service and “Get in Here!” Our diverse & flavorful menu provides customers with delicious Mexican and American fare. You’ll find the comfortable, warm restaurant filled with a crowd as diverse as our menu. Whether there for a special occasion in the event room or a casual gathering with friends & family, Ed’s happily serves groups of many sizes.

Hope you’re not disappointed, but there isn’t really a gate. Estes Park is just the town that’s right on the eastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, which is a completely beeyootiful national treasure. It’s also home to the historic Stanley Hotel, which was what inspired Stephen King to write one of his more frightening books that was made into an absolutely terrifying film, The Shining. Is the Stanley haunted? Some say yes, some say no.

Torbit

Comments Off

Remember when you were a kid and a new pair of sneakers on your feet had you convinced that you could run faster? Well, Torbit is the real deal, but for websites.

We founded Torbit because we believe performance matters. We’ve spent years learning how to make websites blazing fast. In the past, we wasted a lot of time on our own sites doing performance optimizations by hand. We built Torbit because we thought there had to be a better way. Torbit makes advanced performance optimization techniques available to everyone without requiring lots of time or technical knowledge. We have an ambitious goal. We’re here to make the internet faster. Every day, we’re saving people time, making our customers more money and making the internet just a little bit better for everyone.

A faster Internet sounds good to us. Go, Torbit, go!

But back to those fast gym shoes: Is it possible to move like Hermes by strapping some rubber to your paws? Of course not. But just because it didn’t work for The Absent Minded Professor doesn’t mean someone’s not willing to keep trying to get off the ground.

Scary Jane

Comments Off

Listen up people: Halloween is coming right up and after that, the holidays. Don’t panic! But—what do you get for the ghoul or goth who has everything? How about a skull teapot, a snake wreath or blood-scented perfume? Cool stuff, right? Thanks to the gimlet eye of one Scary Jane, there’s a curated list of all things creepy, weird, and darkly groovy for every hobgoblin on your list.

As a child I dreamed of being a librarian, so the next best thing was to open a bookstore. But not just any old bookstore. I opened a haunted bookstore. I loved decorating it and found so many fun everyday things that when put with a skull or a gargoyle became scary. People loved it and wanted to know where I bought everything, so I decided to start this website to bring it all to you.

You know what’s really scary? For this writer, it’s the rats that congregate in the alley when it’s time to take out the garbage at night. But for other people, it’s seeing their parents naked whilst bungee jumping. Or what about those who are afraid of things like flying or heights or teenagers? Yes, that last one is a thing and it’s called ephebiphobia. Scary is as scary does, as my grandmother would have said.

But really? For most of us, scary is that sign at the 7-11 that says you have to have been born by X date to buy booze. Which right now, is 1990. That’s right: 1990 was TWENTY-ONE years ago. Of course you can remember it like it was yesterday:  you were on your third disastrous relationship, wore pegged jeans and a giant perm, had already amassed a mountain of credit card debt, and weren’t fooling anyone with the “taking a year off” plan. Scary!

Cracked up

Comments Off

Congratulations to us! Two of StickerGiant’s more (ahem) controversial products were featured in a recent article on humor site Cracked.com.

For nearly 50 years, Cracked Magazine was the snot-nosed slightly younger brother to the better-known Mad Magazine. Think country cousin versus city kid. But we’re pretty sure Sylvester P. Smythe could have kicked Alfred E. Neuman’s sweet freckled patoot if he deserved it. Or at least beat him in a white lightning boat race.

Anyway, back to our story: The self-explanatory article, 8 Ridiculous Products for Sale on Amazon (For One Penny), ranked such low-brow gems as pins for Dave Coulier fans (admit it, you still watch Full House reruns) and collectibles for anyone longing for a Beanie Baby revival.

Our bargain-basement items weighed in at a respectable #3 (pictured above) and #5. Thanks, Cracked! While it’s not exactly a mention in the Wall Street Journal or even the Colbert Report, we’re stoked that you guys noticed us.

Tell us, dear readers: What do you think?

A.  Any press is better than no press at all.

B.  You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

C.  I’m definitely banking on a Beanie Babies comeback.

Ordr.in

Comments Off

Winter is coming and that means two things around these parts: sweatpants will replace cargo shorts and pizza delivery will replace “beer for dinner.” Which is why we’re so exited to learn about Ordr.in, who are committed to making sure you never have to get off the couch again.

Ordr.in is a distribution system for restaurant e-commerce. We aggregate online food ordering systems from all over the country into an organized marketplace. Thousands of restaurants linked together through software, not phone and fax, that can be accessed through our APIs anyone can easily access this market. Our mission is to increase the number of ways consumers connect with restaurants, and restaurants with consumers. Every restaurant everywhere connected to customers through an efficient digital platform. That’s us.

Seriously, is there anything better than calling someone and 30 minutes later they bring pizza, pad thai, or ribs to your door? Of course there is! Doing it all online so you don’t have to actually talk to anyone. And the time you save from being on hold can be spent thinking of ways to prank the delivery guy. Or watch a funny video about one. Or teach your dog to answer the door.

P.S. to any concerned readers out there: we don’t really have beer for dinner. At least not very often.

Cody Brigan Tattoo Artist

Comments Off

Cody Brigan is a tattoo artist with a dark, gritty style that skews toward Surrealism, plus a bit of goth thrown in for good measure.

Welcome to my online portfolio. My name as you already know is Cody Brigan. I am a tattoo artist currently based out of Cloquet, Minnesota. Tattooing has become my life. I eat, sleep, and breathe tattoos, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I am also certified through The Universal Life Church as a Reverend available for weddings within the state of Minnesota.

Clearly, this guy is a big believer in permanence!

If you’re thinking about joining the millions of people who’ve been decorating themselves for centuries, check out this groovy interactive article from the Washington Post.

And then wait a week to make sure you really, really want that Maori design on your face. Right, Mike Tyson? Although the celebrity tattoo phenom has served to deliver respect to a long-maligned corner. Congratulations, Mr. Dangerfield! Because tattoo regret can be almost as painful as getting inked was. And removal? Fuggeddaboutit.

But if you’re thinking about joining the yakuza just because you’re a fan of irezumi, well, we wish you luck on that one.

Million Moms Challenge

Comments Off

A couple of weeks ago, StickerGiant shipped off an order we’re pretty proud of. We printed stickers for a special segment of Good Morning America that announced the Million Moms Challenge.

By engaging a million Americans with millions of mothers in the developing world around issues that directly impact pregnancy, childbirth and children’s health, the Million Moms Challenge will raise awareness and funds to help women and children everywhere survive and thrive. The Million Moms Challenge is sponsored in part by ABC News, the UN Foundation, BabyCenter and Johnson & Johnson, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Did you know that every year, nearly 8 million kids die before they turn 5, mostly from preventable causes? Or that every 90 seconds, a woman dies during pregnancy or child birth? The Million Moms Challenge is seeking to reverse these terrible statistics by asking American moms (and dads! and everybody!) for help.

The first 100,000 people to register their support for this effort will launch a $100,000 donation to nonprofits helping babies and mothers the world over. Are you up for the challenge? Join now.

Crank Daddy’s Bicycle Works

Comments Off

There’s riding your bike and then there’s cyclocross. If you’re in Milwaukee and you like to get down and dirty on your  bike, there’s a place for people like you:

Typical cyclocross courses are 1.5- to 2-mile loops on a mix of paved and off-road surfaces over flat-to-rolling terrain. You can expect to come across short, steep (often muddy) pitches, which are nearly impossible to ride. There can be intimidating drop-offs, river crossings and technical singletrack, too. Crank Daddy’s uses BG FIT DATA…to capture your body position and pedal stroke on video, perform a quantitative assessment and implement changes to your position with a level of accuracy otherwise unattainable.

What to do when you encounter the “impossible to ride”? You get off the bike and start running. Up a muddy hill. While carrying said bicycle. Which is why you need to be a super-star in shape person and not a lumpy couch creature to win a cyclocross race…which is why you need to hightail it to Crank Daddy’s!

We love the name, by the by. Although at first glance, we were thinking not of bikes but of a father who’s angry cuz the traffic’s bad and the kids are fighting in the back seat and don’t make me stop this car. Oh, crabby dads, we salute you. Because even the angry ones come around, eventually.

Mobile Future

Comments Off

We all love our pocket computer/phone/camera, right? And we get excited by every new development and feature, although sometimes we get irritated by the limitations imposed. Mobile Future does, too, and wants to make sure the big guys play nice with us little guys. Their focus covers everything from the jobs created by investment in wireless technology to the taxes we pay for wireless service:

Mobile Future is a coalition of cutting-edge American technology and communications companies, consumers and a diverse group of non-profit organizations, working to support an environment which encourages investment and innovation in the dynamic wireless sector.  Our mission is to help inform and educate the public and key decision makers in business and government on the broad range of wireless innovations that are transforming our society and the nation’s economy.

Wonder if they could devote some attention to the phenomena wherein parents’ use of technology increases one’s irritation with said parents? Surely there’s been a study on this.

You know what we’re talking about. How they keep forwarding chain emails or refuse to pay DSL. Or expect you to drive 30 miles to “fix the Internet.” Or treat your XML developer boyfriend as their personal IT department and ask him to fix their DirectTV or OnStar or the havoc wrought by the virus from that Viagra email they opened—all while referring to him as “the A/V guy.” Sigh. Parents just don’t understand.

City Limits Bar

Comments Off

A loyal StickerGiant customer sent in this photo of their bar decorated with stickers representing an array of NFL teams.

City Limits Bar in Port St. Lucie, Florida is a “stand-alone bar” that offers sports, games, DJs, Karaoke, live music, and of course, Ladies Night. What’s a stand-alone bar? Florida law requires restaurants to abolish smoking, even in their bar areas. But bars with limited menus can choose to allow it, because they’re not technically restaurants. Get it? So don’t come here expecting a 12-course meal…but, boy, their wings sound delicious.

Party on, Port St. Lucie! Nice job, and thanks for choosing StickerGiant.
