Pierce the Mundane to Find the Marvelous

Bill Moyers: pierce the mundane to find the marvelous

Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous. - Bill Moyers

Whether you're a writer or a designer, there's nothing more frightening - or inspiring - than a blank page ...

Designing a new sticker is like facing that blank page, and then some. It's a blank page and moving target, all in one.

Design success isn't found by just checking off the boxes and flicking the switches. If it was that simple, anyone could blast through the ordinary to reach the stratosphere.

You've got to start with a great idea and steer it all the way through to completion.

Lets go two-for-one on the quotes today and borrow a chestnut from Thomas Alva Edison ... "genius is one percent inspiration, ninety nine percent perspiration." Bottling magic is one thing. Getting it to market is quite another.

If you want a truly marvelous custom sticker that stops 'em dead in their tracks, you'll do well to trust the instincts of a creative design professional.

Solving Those Simple Problems

If beer, coffee, or a nap can't solve it ...

If beer, coffee, or a nap can't cure it, you've got a serious problem.

- unknown

Consider the daily cycle of fluid intake. It's all about clearing the head.

We crank up our days with large doses of liquified caffeine and wind them down with a pint or two of malt beverage.

The middle of the day calls for a different approach. Many folks encounter a mid-afternoon slump that can't be solved with a beer and is too monumental for a purely caffeinated approach. Only a good nap will cross this void.

When properly implemented, a power nap turns one day into two.

A mere thirty minutes of effective napping can deliver enhanced productivity and a higher level of well-being.

The next time you're feeling run down on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon, give into the urge to take a nap. Find a dark, quiet room and a fuzzy blanket and set an alarm for no more than thirty minutes.

If you're feeling especially run down, drink a cup of green tea (or iced green tea) before flicking the light switch. You'll wake up with with an extra kick.

One day, our great country will come around to the idea. Imagine a presidential candidate running on a platform that includes a national nap policy, to raise well-being, increase worker productivity, and reduce medical expenses. Now that would be a dream ticket ...

Need a power nap how-to?

What Does it Take to be a Howling Success?

You will never become a howling success ...

You'll Never Become a Howling Success by Just Howling ... - Bob Harrington

Simple howls are one thing. Music is something else, altogether.

Born in White Station, Mississippi, Chester Arthur Burnett became one of the most influential blues musicians of the mid 20th century. He recorded on the Chess label and achieved success not just as a musician, but as a band leader. Chester navigated through a tremendously difficult childhood and earned the Howlin’ Wolf name from his grandfather.

Howlin Wolf's renditions of "Little Red Rooster", "Back Door Man" and Spoonful" are legendary. Over the years, he shared the stage with the biggest of the big, from Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Bo Diddley, through Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.

Don't just howl when that moon is full. Go out and make some music ...

A Beer Called Mondays

They should make a beer called mondays ...

They should make a beer called Mondays.

(That would be a case of the Monday's I wouldn't mind having.)

Wednesdays are our usual day for quotes here on the StickerGiant blog, but this one had to run today.

StickerGiant prints boatloads of custom beer labels for breweries across the country. We love this business. And we love our customers. That's why we're issuing an off-the-cuff challenge ...

Can we start a campaign to encourage the word "Mondays" to find its way onto beer labels?

Lets go out on a limb and jumpstart a meme!

If your brewery crafts a new Mondays concoction and we print the labels, we'll feature it here on the StickerGiant blog.

Maybe I should have checked with the mind trust before coming up with this crazy idea (or had that second cup of coffee), but I'll always fall back on the "it's better to ask forgiveness than permission" strategy ... and doubly so on a Monday ...

It's Not Easy Doing Nothing.

Leslie finds it difficult to do nothing.

It's not easy being a couch potato. Or as the late great Leslie Nielsen put it ...

"Doing nothing is very hard to do ... you never know when you're finished."

Of course, Yogi Berra had the answer for that: "it ain't over till it's over."

I spent a good bit of time looking for an appropriate YouTube clip to pay tribute to Leslie, but almost each clip I found was off-color in some way, bound to offend someone, somewhere. A fine, yet inappropriate tribute to his genius.

Eventually, I found this one, from the Naked Gun:

A funny clip, yes, but far from his funniest. Carefully chose to insure that no one would take offense at any innuendo.

A half an hour into this, I realized that I was - in reality - doing nothing. Leslie's quote had inspired me to burn those precious minutes, when I could have been writing something truly deep and inspiring. Instead, I kept hitting the play button, as I giggled over clip after clip. All in the name of research!

So this weekend, when you've got nothing to do and are looking for something to watch, find a great movie with Leslie Nielsen to soak up that time ... lest my time today to have been truly spent with no purpose ...

It's All One Big Experiment

Consider Everything an Experiment!

If you get called out on something, call it an experiment and see what the boss says.

You can call it research. You can call it fun. You can call me anything but late for dinner.

"Sorry, boss! I was trying something new. I've been thinking about it for weeks. I thought this might make things move faster. I thought it might save a few bucks. I had to give it a whirl, to see if it worked."

I was working in the lab late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight ...

Get out the proverbial beakers and Petri dishes, kids ... because life is one. big. experiment.

Nothing great happens without experimentation, whether it's a marketing campaign, a research project, or new product development. If it works, wham! If it doesn't, give it another whirl.

So do your planning, form that hypothesis, don a lab coat, press the big green button, and document everything along the way.
