It's time again for the Annual Bob Turner Classic 5k, now in its 15th year. This event is a fundraiser that supports the athletic and academic needs of the students at Turner Middle School in Berthoud, Colorado, a neighboring town near our factory. They have a die cut circle sticker with their event name and a blue dragon representing the school mascot.
The 5K event itself is open to all age groups and all ability levels. You can go out to win, or you can go out with a friend for a beautiful walk through Berthoud. Kids are encouraging, along with strollers, and if you best, four-legged friend wants to join, leash them up for a run. Last year the 14th Annual Bob Turner Classic raised $6000.00 dollars for their athletics program, which is an incredible contribution to the school and the district. With our sponsorships, we love to see when the community comes together to do some good.
For the 5K race they have several categories:
Grade 3 & Under
Grade 9 to Age 19
Age 20 to 29
Age 30 to 39
Age 40 to 49
Age 50 to 59
Age 60 +
They also have a free 100-yard Dragon Dash event for the youngsters who aren't able to do the whole 5K yet.
Here's a little bit more about the event's namesake.
The Bob Turner Classic was named in memory of Robert Turner for whom our school is now named. Bob Turner was born and raised here in Berthoud, Colorado, the same town that his ancestors founded. He attended Berthoud schools and in 1939 graduated from Berthoud High School. After high school he attended the University of Colorado and then married another Berthoud native, Violette Lucas. Bob then became a teacher and eventually a high school principal in Littleton, Estes Park, Rocky Ford, Sterling, and Greeley. In 1969 he became the Director of Instruction for Thompson School District, and in 1980 Bob Turner accepted the post of Superintendent of the Thompson School District. He retired in 1983.
