Software Development Manager

The Software Development Manager is an essential working manager who will provide in-house guidance for our ongoing software development. This opportunity is a blended role to lead a small section of the IT team while staying actively involved in software development. Ideally, you enjoy leading and developing people, as well as, staying hands-on in the work. You are a software developer with experience in connecting the dots between individual application components and the bigger picture of the solution or business need to inform design decisions and prompt creative team thinking.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Software Development (50%)

  • Work with team members to design innovative software programs and applications that improve and simplify the user experience for both internal and external customers
  • Collaborate on application architecture and design by evaluating business needs, problem definition, and requirements
  • Develop high-level system design diagrams for technical design, coding, testing, debugging and documentation
  • Contribute to application development, including implementation of new features and critical fixes
  • Prepare and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming for web-based applications or system integrations in a Scrum/Agile environment
  • Design, develop and implement unit and business scenario testing for existing code base and for new functionality under development, ensuring all code meets requirements
  • Support all types of application testing (system, integrated, user acceptance) based on project needs
  • Collaborate on integration architecture used to connect internal and/or external systems
  • Interact with project managers to plan project schedules and technical direction
  • Research and apply new web and mobile technologies, as needs arise
  • Implement scalable solutions involving cloud-based infrastructure
  • Develop SQL & API-based data access and integration applications

Leadership (50%)

  • Manage a mixed on-site and remote development team (3-5 Giants), alongside external strategic partners
  • Support, guide, coach, and mentor software engineers by providing advice, coaching, and educational opportunities
  • Set the execution plan for the team in alignment with department or company goals
  • Inspire others by clarifying expectations to get the job done

  • Handle conflict in a thoughtful, forthright, and timely manner  
  • Remove obstacles for people, process, technology, or products
  • Manage project or vendor budgets
  • Conduct quarterly check-ins/performance reviews to assess employee performance and correct performance when necessary

 

EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field is required
  • 3-7 years experience in application development
  • Experience supervising and leading a small technical team (co-located or remote)
  • Experience mentoring junior software developers on design patterns, development best practices, and DevOps trade-offs is preferred

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Strong coding skills in programming languages like JavaScript, PHP, Node
  • Working knowledge of object-oriented design and development skills
  • Extensive experience in Agile methods in a team setting (Scrum Master experience preferred)
  • Proven ability to apply software development best practices throughout the development lifecycle
  • Successful track record of developing quality software products and shipping production-ready software
  • Experience with web-based application development and architecture, including AWS tools and services
  • Excellent organizational, attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Exemplary communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages according to the audience
  • Experience prioritizing and assigning work to meet deadlines and evolving business needs
  • Experience supervising, developing, motivating, and growing a team by working with each of its members, including coaching, performance improvements as needed
  • Experience with/in:
  • Front-end frameworks (i.e. Vue, AngularJS, JQuery)
  • Back-end application programming languages/technologies (i.e. JSON, XML, REST, NoSQL Database, MongoDB, Cassandra, Distributed System, RDBMS, API’s, Python)
  • Content management systems (i.e. Apostrophe, Drupal, WordPress)
  • Data access and integration methods between on-prem and SaaS systems using SQL, API’s, and/or Python
  • LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) and/or server-side Java programming
  • Bonus points if you have UI/UX design experience and/or automated test framework experience

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Duties require standing/walking throughout some of the workday, based on project needs
  • Able to lift 10 lbs. continuously and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs.
  • Occasional climbing, stooping, bending, overhead reaching, fine hand manipulation (i.e. grasping and gripping)

 

POSITION SCHEDULE DETAILS

  • Full-time position
  • Monday - Friday (40 hours/week)
  • Occasional weekend work, based on various project needs
